It is summer in Tallahassee! For our statewide network, that means regrouping for the next legislative season, and we have a renewed sense of purpose!
Florida’s children from birth to age five are the largest age group of maltreated children, with adverse childhood experiences that impact their life trajectory, including about 50% of children who are not ready for kindergarten. Fortunately, the early years offer the best opportunity to hard-wire positive experiences and resiliency. Although the COVID response interrupted progress, there is increasing bipartisan momentum around early childhood investments.
Florida’s First 1000 Days Coalition was formed in 2014 to convene various stakeholders (e.g., hospitals, early intervention, early education, home visiting, pediatrics, child welfare, etc.) around the pivotal early childhood development period. The Coalition aims to align Florida efforts under “one big tent” for collective impact toward strengthening policies and evidence-based services in four key policy areas: Expanding quality childcare, promoting healthy development and mental health, improving outcomes for young children in child welfare, and supporting economic policies to promote stable, self-sufficient families.
Previous efforts include a summit of 800 partners in 2014, spiking enthusiasm for a second summit with 1000 partners in 2017, and a virtual summit in 2021. The Coalition seeks to convene a 2025 Summit to deepen and expand support for policies and investments focused on the First 1000 Days.
The opportunity to solidify partnerships and move policies influencing quality health and well-being toward future legislative consideration is now!
The First 1000 Days priority areas align in a crosswalk with the Healthy People 2030 framework objectives, the State Health Improvement Plan, and the social determinants of health to support the complex systems caring for the most vulnerable Floridians.
